The COST Action CA22162 “FutureMed – A Transdisciplinary Network to Bridge Climate Science and Impacts on Society” is pleased to announce the 1st FutureMed Workshop and Training School, which will be held in Chania, Greece, from 29 September to 3 October 2025.
The Workshop will take place over three days, from 29 September to 1 October. The Training School will cover the whole period, 29 September to 3 October, featuring lectures and practical sessions. The students are also expected to attend the workshop plenary sessions.
The Mediterranean region stands at the forefront of climate vulnerability. As a climate change hotspot, the region experiences multifaceted impacts of global warming, ranging from extreme weather events and sea-level rise to coastal erosion and pollution, that converge and intensify. These environmental stressors do not operate in isolation; rather, they interact across socio-economic systems, compounding risks and generating cascading effects that undermine urban resilience, ecosystem integrity, economic stability, and public health. Despite the systemic nature of these challenges, prevailing scientific and policy responses remain largely fragmented, often constrained within disciplinary silos that hinder the development of holistic, effective adaptation strategies.
In response to the urgent need for integrated and collaborative action, the COST Action FutureMed — bringing together over 440 members across 42 countries — stands as a pioneering initiative that drives a paradigm shift toward impact-oriented research. By fostering transdisciplinary collaboration and innovation, FutureMed seeks to address the complex, interconnected challenges posed by climate change.
By convening experts from climate and social sciences, governance, risk management, and other disciplines, FutureMed catalyzes the co-creation of actionable, science-based solutions that confront the interlinked risks facing critical sectors such as energy, agriculture, tourism, and health. Through this integrative platform, FutureMed aims to transform knowledge production and application, reinforcing the connection between scientific research and real-world decision-making across the Mediterranean and beyond to:
- Enhance awareness of climate impact
- Define future research priorities
- Build adaptive capacity through knowledge exchange and transdisciplinary research
- Develop science-informed strategies and policies
- Strengthen Mediterranean resilience against cascading climate impacts.
- Engage citizens and decision-makers through knowledge-sharing and co-creation
Through knowledge-sharing initiatives, FutureMed will contribute to empowering Mediterranean societies to anticipate, co-design, adapt to, and thrive amid the challenges of a changing climate. By promoting long-lasting collaboration across disciplines and bridging the gap between science and practice, the workshop will support the development of resilient, forward-looking strategies that enhance regional capacity to navigate complex and evolving climate risks.
